THE GUARDIAN
Lucy Hughes
is a graduate in product design from the University of Sussex, who at the age
of 24 has won the James Dyson award for her biodegradable and compostable
material known as Marina Tex.
This is a
bio plastic made of organic fish waste. It is translucent and strong and it is
suitable for single-use packaging. It will break down in home compost or food
waste bins between four and six weeks.
Marina Tex
solves two problems: the ubiquity of single-use plastic and fish waste.
Hughes says
that we can’t use plastic in products that have a short live because plastic
has a long life. So, she is very excited to have the opportunity to develop and
research all possible uses of plastic with the prize, which is 30,000 pounds.
