MEMORY BANDA

MEMORY BANDA

A worrior's cry against child marriage.
Eliten Piri is from Malaui, she is 13 years old and she has written a poem against child marriage.
She says nobody is the world can marry her if she doesn't want to. Ther can beat her, chase her or do something bad to her, but she will marry when she wants, not before finishing school and growing up.

Malaui is a very poor country and this is very common. Memory Banda explains the story of her small sister, who got pregnant at 11.
In Malaui teenage girls go to initiation camps where they learn to sexually satisfy a man. They get pregnant and sometimes get HIV and AIDS.
Now, her sister is 16 and has tree children and two of her marriages have failed.

Banda refused to go to one of those camps when she was 13. She wanted to study and contribute something to her community.

Then she met other girls like her sister and they shared their experiences and decided to write them down and tell the leaders of the community what they didn't like. They pushed so hard thet now in the community a girl doesn't have to marry until 18.

She continued until the Parliament made a law and now in Malaui women don't have to marry until 18.
Memory Banda says that some laws already exist but they must be obeyrd.

Now is the time to fight against child marriage in every cowntry and respect women rights.
